The Wonderful World of Tagging

This was an easy assignment this week. Lisa and I created a flickr account after the Dairy Festival so we could share all our photos with the folks at work. I don't think some of them believed we were serious about a dairy festival! Take a look! I'm still amazed how many sites/applications are owned by the same few companies. I had no idea that Flickr was part of Yahoo.

I think tagging is pretty cool. I can't wait to explore PennTags. That's definitely interesting. And I love that Wikipedia uses the term metadata.

I used Del.icio.us for classes before so I was already pretty familiar with it. I set up a bloglines account and had my Del.icio.us stuff go there. It's neat to be able to look at what other people have bookmarked. I can't wait til we get to Week 5 and Social Cataloging. I hate that I'm going to miss the facilitated session this Friday. We're going to be talking about some cool stuff like Skype and Google Docs.

Facebook Blues

well I've been trying to avoid this since it started but I've finally been resigned to joining Facebook. I've just never gotten into this sort of thing before. I just looked at MySpace for the first time yesterday. A friend from high school called the other day and said that our 10 year reunion is coming up and they're using MySpace to contact everybody. I had fun looking at everybody's profiles, but I still didn't join!

I'm sure I'll come around, but so far I don't like Facebook. I just don't get the whole updating your status thing. Who cares really? But I couldn't tell everyone else to do these assignments and not actually do them myself so I finally just joined. I updated my profile and added some friends from LHL.

It's a Wiki Wiki World

I had never really used a wiki before until library school. In my metadata class we used a wiki to index alumni magazines. It was pretty cool. We made up the vocabulary and developed narrower, broader, and related terms as well as "see also"s and scope notes. These are some of the ones I indexed: Sela Ward and USA Today's Academic Team.

When I took over Resource of the Month, I developed a wiki so that we can all brainstorm ideas and topics without having to physically meet. It's difficult trying to find a time that we can all meet! So far the ROTM wiki has worked pretty well. I still send an email to everybody whenever I update the wiki though. I should probably know this, but can you subscribe to a wiki with RSS? I've been toying with the idea of making the ROTM webpage into a wiki, but I haven't done it yet. Right now I'm experimenting with making ROTM a blog instead. That way, all the previous ROTMs will be right there on the same page...very organized--I hope!

Posting Photos.....

turned out to be a lot harder than I thought. Good grief!! I tried to put a picture up this morning, but I kept getting weird error messages. So I tried again this afternoon. FINALLY, I saw the note at the bottom of the Blogger Help screen that said to copy the second url for the photo rather than the first because the size of the first one is sometimes too big. Wow! But, now there's a beautiful picture of Gracie for the world to see!

Week 1

There are a couple of blogs I read everyday and others that I read every week or so. I've used blogs before, but this is the first one I created on my own iniative. The others were for school and such. Blogger is pretty easy to use though I'm most familiar with WordPress.

On to week 2......
